Dr Kamal Gupta

Dr. Kamal Gupta, Chairman, of a leading Management Institute, is undoubtedly a well renowned educationist and Visionary. A vision is a must for a charismatic leader who is responsible for envisioning, empowering. emerging and designing to attain the goal of the Institute//organization. Dr. Gupta is an embodiment of perquisites for charismatic leadership such as sensing opportunities and threats, simplifying complex situation, defining strategies, open to new ways, taking decisions, with an eye towards the big picture and inspiring others to look beyond limitations.

This could also be found in the following vision statement of the institute. The “Freedom Of Spirit” is what the Management Institute wishes to equip in its students; to carry forward the spirit of our culture that enables one to dream and believe, not only to be effective and efficient leaders, but also to be visionaries with the faith and courage to redefine limits and rise above the ordinary. The developments in the institute vindicate the qualities of the charismatic leadership of Dr. Kamal Gupta, who visualized building an institution that would create managers who would play a pivotal role in the economic development and growth of our country.

According to him “a good management is vital as these students of today will be the business leaders of tomorrow”. Dr. Gupta focused on improving the infrastructure by upgrading the same to a state of the art technology. He emphasizes that “The golden rule is to never compromise on quality”. After completing his graduation in commerce with Honours in the year 1963, Dr. Gupta went on to acquire a Degree in Law just two years thereafter from the University of Mumbai and practiced Law for a couple of years. However, there was a growing need to look after the affairs of the Management Institute and he therefore, gave up his practice and devoted all his time and energy to start the Management Institute in the 1990s. Taking the institute to greater heights, Dr. Gupta became the Founder Chairman of the Management Institute which was started in 1995.

He has effortlessly taken this management wing from a raw novice to a full fledged state of the art institute. He undertook the cumbersome process of revamping the institute by creating appropriate infrastructural facilities, improving course content, introducing new and relevant courses, establishing appropriate linkages between courses offered and job markets. Dr. Gupta being closely associated with the affairs of the Institute is a live force for incessantly inspiring the students to learn. He believes that there is no age gap on learning and acquiring knowledge and Dr. Kamal Gupta himself strengthens this belief.

The fact that words are as good as deeds is evident from the Ph.D Degree that was awarded to him by the University of Mumbai in August 2008 in the subject Critical Evaluation of the APMC Act in the State of Maharashtra. Thus, he sets a fine example for students and staff of the Institute in terms of the constant self motivation that he imbibes to learn, encourage and inspire. On the strength of his experience, Dr. Gupta says, To climb the coveted ladder of success, one must acquire the appropriate skill, knowledge and attitude needed for exploiting the available opportunities. Once this is achieved, the world is your oyster”. Based on his rich and varied expertise in building the B-School, Dr. Gupta adopted a mission to develop the Management Institute as an educational centre of international excellence in management, learning and innovation devoted fully to Education, Training, Research and Consultancy Services, which would match the best Institutes in the world. The investment in the two main pillars of the B School namely, physical capital and soft capital during the last two decades has been substantial. As a result, a State-Of-The-Art Computer Center has been provided with IBM, Wipro Desktop Computers, powered with Pentium IV, 13and 15 processors. The entire arrangement is oriented with 2 Xeon Based servers & a structured networking system with Broadband Connectivity of 100MBPS Leased line, and an internet port from Hathway.

The Computer Center provides an excellent internet surfing & downloading facility. The Center also has laptops which are used by the students for presentations. Students are provided with State-of the-art Wi-fi technology; enabling wireless access. The Institute’s persistent endeavor contributed to the emergence of a rich and resourceful library encompassing user friendly software including SOUL 2.0, EBSCO, J-GATE, and NPTEL, and as many as 30,000 books and 150 national and international journals, seating arrangement for more than 100 readers, lecture rooms and teaching aids and these facilities are in no way inferior to any Top Class Institute, All Classrooms are fitted with air conditioners, LCD, white boards and other facilities for Power point presentations.

Taking a clue from the prevailing environment in the market, the Institute has focused on developing a Career And Guidance Cell with all its dimensions to improve the marketability of students studying in the Institute.

Apart from the guest lectures for grooming and development, there are training and development programmes for equipping the students with necessary knowledge, skill and attitude. For this purpose reputed consultants, training, grooming and developing agencies are hired to bring about the all round development of the students. Furthermore, the Career and Guidance Cell’s requirement of human resource is fully addressed. As many as four Assistant Professors having experience in the area of placement activities have been recruited for this purpose. The Institute has created a 360°arrangement and systems to provide placement assistance to students studying in the Institute. The Founder Trustees of the institute were renowned philanthropists, caring for society and Corporate Social Responsibility.

Therefore the spirit underlying all our activities is also directed towards welfare of the society through education, training and development with a view to moulding the young minds to become effective and efficient managers and business leaders. One of the significant lessons learned from the recent global financial crisis is that the management students should not forget ethics in business and Corporate Social Responsibility. Accordingly, the Institute is laying emphasis on ethics in business and importance of Corporate Social Responsibility. In furtherance of the above, socially relevant activities such as blood donation camp, eye camp and language lab are regularly organized in the institute. For effective management one of the requirements is to keep abreast of the latest development in the market, industry, policy environment and so on.

In order to keep our students abreast of the latest developments, the institute is organizing national seminars, workshops, guest lectures, project work etc. We strongly believe in going beyond the syllabus. The knowledge, skill and attitude generated by completing syllabus is not adequate to manage real world issues. Therefore, our emphasis is on creating opportunities for greater exposure to industry, business, event management, organizational skill etc. For this purpose all events happening in the Institute are mostly managed by students under the guidance of their teachers. The students are also encouraged to take up short term assignments with industry and business. Learning is more effective if students are engaged in discussion, case study analysis.

The hands on experience and involvement in various applied activities would go a long way in imparting the requisite knowledge. skill and attitude and for this purpose emphasis on case study pedagogy. workshop, short discussion, making students to prepare several live cases is a broadly accepted policy in our institute. With the opening up of Indian economy, several challenges have been generated. In this context the attitude of managers, skill required for the manager and lastly the knowledge necessary for effective management would undergo considerable change. In this environment, innovation at different levels in business and adoption of blue ocean strategy is the only answer. As reflected in our vision and mission statement we motivate our students to become entrepreneurs rather than simply opting for service.

In order to facilitate students in this institute to get a hands on experience and to promote entrepreneurial activities, we have established an entrepreneurship development cell which provides all necessary basic inputs to motivate students for becoming entrepreneurs. To become a successful entrepreneur one of the requirement is sensing opportunities and acquiring the requisite skill, knowledge and attitude and deep commitment and passion. To make use of the opportunities and sensing opportunities, industrial tours, Alumni meets, summer placements, mentoring etc., are emphasized and undertaken regularly.
